After reading this month’s issue of the walking dead I am happy to say that
(Spoilers)
Michonne has returned but it’s a rather bittersweet reunion for those involved and I guess I shouldn't have expected anything less given ricks statement in issue 130 “even after everything that’s happened, I miss Michonne.” I was expecting something more along the lines of her betraying them in some way that warranted her exile, though in hindsight I see now that she most likely would have been placed in the prison with Negan. Well it turns out that what did happen is that she up and left one morning without telling anyone and left all of her belongings at Ezekiel’s home in the Kingdom. Rick is pretty upset about this not only because of her sudden disappearance but also the danger that people were put in while searching for her. He does mention that no one was lost during the search.
Michonne has been out on the sea recently to become some sort of fish merchant for the communities. This was apparently a great career move given the post-apocalyptic world they now live in. As a fellow Kingdom resident named Pete is happy to point out "Almost more fish than water out there these days. It's a wonder what the death of humanity does for ocean life." So that’s a thing now. Whatever I’m just happy to see Ezekiel and Michonne again. Being the living ball of anxiety that I am, I often worry about fictional characters when they are not present for any length of time. Needless to say, this issue was a great relief to me.
This might also be one of my favorite issues of the series due to the fact that we finally get to learn a bit more about Michonne’s life before the rise of the walkers. After Rick asks her if she found what she was looking for out there she goes on to tell rick about her family. How she abandoned her children to move closer to her law firm where she was recently promoted. Due to this promotion her relationship with her husband had become strained, I’m assuming unless I misread the context. She further explains that once the turn happened she went back to find her daughters but they were nowhere to be seen. The preface to these conversations was that when you are out on the water you don’t have time to think of anything else. So it seems that Michonne has taken a few steps back in how willing she is to be open with people. What I mean by that is when she first came to the prison the last thing she wanted to do was be around people let alone have to talk to them and now it seems that she has come full circle.
There was a quick look at what’s happening with Carl in this issue and it was kind of odd because the whisperers seem to be taking him in to their ranks. At the very least they seem to be leading him into a false sense of security so than can kill him. It’s hard to say really as there was not enough of that situation explored to make any assumptions at this point. It will be nice to see Lydia’s reaction to him having followed her and as much as I enjoy this new relationship of his I can’t help but wonder what’s going to happen with Sophia. As for that other girl who he got the note from…..I don’t care about her I have no idea who she is and it’s been far too long since she was mentioned so I’ll probably never care to be honest
Overall this issue had everything. Michonne and Ezekiel, character development, EXPOSITION, and we got to see what Carl is doing. The only reason I am excited about that small glimpse of Carl is because readers of this comic know that the writers like to do things with characters and then not talk about them again for months.
