Jurassic World. I have so much to say about this movie but at the same time I don’t know if I really want to yet. After waiting more than ten years for this sequel, I’m not entirely sure if I’m satisfied with the end result. Now amazingly this isn’t one of those situations where expectations were too high to be realized. It’s simply a situation where I expected to the movie to be truly awful and during some parts I think that I was right. Now I don’t want you to think of this as any kind of attack towards the film or anyone involved in its creation. But here we go.
I have spent the majority of the past decade googling Jurassic Park four. And it seemed like every time I did there was some new information about possible cast members and plot details and every time I would be devastated when it came to light that none of it was real. After a while I stopped caring and wouldn’t you know it, Jurassic world is officially announced by universal. I was absolutely over the goddamn moon about this. At least until I realized that none of the cast from the first three would be in it. Then I learned that the star of the film would be Chris Pratt. I don’t care how many of you stop reading after that last comment. I’m not entirely sure what it is about this guy but he just bugs me, it’s probably not even him as a person. It’s most likely the people and insanity surrounding him because I’ve honestly never seen him in anything that I didn’t enjoy his character in. I even watched parks and recreation a few times and he was very funny. Anyway like I said I don’t know what it is about him exactly, but I immediately discounted this film after I had heard that.
I thought the story of the film was fitting, considering that Dr. Wu showed up. I never really expected him to turn out to be such a douche and I’m almost positive he died in the first novel. So maybe he should have stayed dead. Other than the fact that he was the lead Geneticist he could have been completely cut from the film. There was villain enough in that fat guy from InGen who wants the Raptors weaponized….somehow?
Speaking of the Raptors, this was my largest problem with the movie. To be more specific about that, my problem was with the raptor pack chase scene. I get that the movie was intended for a different generation and that’s fine. I’m sure this movie did for a lot of kids what the original film did for me and so many others. But seriously, that was stupid. Raptors are like the Wasp of the Dinosaur world, their only reason for existence is to murder everything, just like a wasp’s only purpose is to kill and be a dick. Raptors are not your bros; they are the perfect killing machine and the only reason that they don’t still exist is because of a giant space rock. I’m getting off topic here but I think I’ve made my stance on this part of the film clear.
The super hybrid dinosaur was ten different kinds of rad though. From the moment that thing broke out of its pen by tricking its captors I was in love. When I was finally able to see the entire thing though I have to say I was kind of…. I don’t want to say let down because the thing was a total badass but after all the talk about the thing online and even in the movie I was expecting it to be this giant hulking unstoppable beast. Turns out though, it was just the fat kid who bullied people on the playground. Big and loud, but able to be taken out by anyone who bothered to stand up to him. To be completely fair here the thing was tag teamed, but still.
There was this weird unnecessary part of the film where the kids who I assumed were the main characters, discussed how their parents were getting a divorce. Then it was never spoken of again. So that happened. They also just didn’t seem to fit into the film as well as Lex and Tim did in the first film.
Another thing I didn’t like about the movie as a whole was its open endedness. I don’t really know why I just wish the film had ended on a more final note. Anyway I suppose overall this was an outstanding film even though it could have been so much more, I did enjoy it for what it was. I can’t say I want to see another one but maybe that’s just because I’m not five anymore.
My opinion: Go see the movie, just don’t expect the world from it. Despite the title.
