Final fantasy Type-0…. I’m not really sure where to begin with this game. Oh wait yes I am, By killing a beloved icon of the series in the most traumatizing way I can think of alongside what I can only assume to have been a high school student. Now I am aware that everyone under the sun who has written about this game so far has pointed out how the game’s opening cut scene is a very depressing monologue between a Chocobo and a young soldier whose name I can’t seem to remember. That’s super funny because the students aren’t able to remember people who are lost in battle. Which is some sort of defense mechanism implemented in them so they don’t feel regret so I feel much better about not being able to remember him, definitely no chance of that backfiring in the future by the way. Despite everyone having written about this already I would like to take this moment to say that this games opening may have given me clinical depression. The preface to the game paints a very bleak picture for the children of class zero and the world in which they reside. The story is essentially this. The head of the Milites Empire, Marshal Cid Aulstyne launches an attack on Rubrum in an attempt to steal their crystal as a part of his plan to hold all four. Each country has an animal symbol tied to its crystal there is a turtle, a tiger, a dragon and yours is a bird. This sets the stage for over sixty hours of war torn landscapes, loss of friends and possibly your life should it come to that.
I wouldn’t worry too much about any of class zero dying however as they seem to have the ability to be resurrected once they arrive back at the school of Akademia so death for them is more or less inconsequential. Now I’m not saying that I expect hyper realism form video games least of all a final FANTASY game. However given the atmosphere of the game it would have been nice to see a mechanic that required you to take extra precautions with your party members similar to the one seen in Valkyrie Profile 3: Covenant of the Plume where once someone in your party died they were gone for good, At least until the last battle of the game where they come after you seeking vengeance for having sacrificed them. Despite that personal issue with the story I will say even though I did not finish the game I spent about twenty five hours playing it so I will say that despite the major tone shift the game has taken from the final fantasy series I did enjoy it a great deal. I think the only reason I did like it as much as I did is because I enjoy war drama and this game has more than enough of it.
The battle system was a little difficult for me to get the hang of at first. After about an hour of fumbling through battles and trying to figure out what the “cut cards” command was doing other than creating shiny distractions I was able to kill my enemies without dying a few times first. Once I got the hang of the targeting system which allows you to critically injure an enemy or instantly kill them based on the color of your targeting icon (yellow being a critical and red for the insta-kills). I am happy to say that I still struggled with the combat system. Not in the way that I was unable to understand it rather that I’m just a unique kind of bad at action games.
I’m fully aware that this is not the case but as far as I can see all of the characters have the same face with a swapped wig. Some of them are out right obnoxious. There is one character from class zero that like to add yo and man to the end of his sentences. Another is a young girl who I’m guessing is around seventeen years of age but acts and sounds like a six year old. Others are simply stereotypical young people while at the same time they are all highly trained killing machines who also happen to be artificially created humans. Don’t act like you didn’t see that coming this is a Square Enix game
JRPG’s are a special weird but I can’t help but keep buying them and as much as I initially hated this game, by the time I was finished playing it I was left hoping for more games like it. Despite the fact that I’m terrible at it I really ended up enjoying the experience.
Despite the last few final fantasy games being monumental failures that somehow warranted steam releases? It seems that Tetsuya Nomura is back on point. The world will now be a better place for it.
