The Culling of The Cows is one of those rare games that are so bad that, even if you had gotten it for free you would still curse it existence in your steam library. That’s not to say that this game doesn’t have potential, it’s just that the monotony of it begins to wear on you very quickly. The premise is this: You are a farmer that must defend his land against legions of undead farm animals; with a little help from your buddy God himself. God can help you with skills that protect your barn entrance such as, a mounted sub-machine gun, fire and placing the front of (whatever Frank from the movie Cars was) in front of your door. In addition to the right hand of God however, is your trusty Boom Stick which can be upgraded to shoot faster, reload faster and even use different types of ammunition.
You use the left mouse button to fire ahead of you and the right to fire behind you like some kind of red butt-flap pajama wearing gunslinger. You move by using the WASD keys while your upgrades and assists are used by pressing the 1-8 keys. Your money, which is used for upgrades and such, is obtained after every level you complete and is subsequently applied to the following stage. Reloading your weapon has to be the most obnoxious part of this game. It is done by pressing the R key for each shell you reload and is so slow that most of the time during reloading the zombie cows will have reached you and gored you to death. Maybe it was supposed to be part of the challenge in the game but even if that were the case, that concept is lost on the final product considering you can’t move out of the way and reload at the same time.
Each level consists of walking up down left or right and shooting the faces off of Zombie animals and you get little medals at the end of each level based on your performance. They are usually for not letting enemies get past you and not missing any shots things of that nature.
And there you have it. The Culling of The Cows is available right now on Steam for $1.29 discounted form $12.99. So……yeah. If you feel like wasting two bucks go ahead and pick it up. It could keep you entertained for twenty minutes or so.
But I honestly can’t recommend doing so. Save your money and go buy a mountain Dew or something.
